University of Iowa Professor Robert Ketterer was named a 2015-16 Scholar-in-Residence at the Newberry, an independent research library in Chicago. He will use the Newberry collections to study how narratives from ancient history were adapted in 17th and 18th century operas to reflect European relations with the Ottoman Empire.

Ketterer is a professor in the Department of Classics, part of the UI College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. His research interest is in Greek and Roman drama and its reception in the classical tradition, with a special interest in early Italian opera.

The Newberry’s Scholar-in-Residence program selects postdoctoral scholars in the humanities each year to conduct research in the library’s collection. Privileges of the program include reserve space for materials, extended access to the Newberry, and opportunities to present work-in-progress to the Newberry’s scholarly community.
