Classics and Religious Studies Professor Bob Cargill featured on Bible Odyssey website

Bob CargillUniversity of Iowa Assistant Professor Bob Cargill was featured on Bible Odyssey, a website dedicated to scholarly discussion of people, places, and passages of the Bible. In the video, he talked about the origins of baptism in Judaism.

Cargill has a joint appointment in the Departments of Classics and Religious Studies, both in the UI College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He teaches courses on archaeology, biblical studies, and the digital humanities, among other subjects. He has appeared as an expert on numerous television documentaries and specials, and hosted a National Geographic Channel documentary.

In the Bible Odyssey video, Cargill discussed how the Christian approach to baptism was likely developed from a ritual immersion practice in Judaism. Prior to the advent of Christianity, Cargill said, Jews practiced ritual immersion to purify themselves for worship.


The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines. About 15,000 undergraduate and nearly 2,000 graduate students study each year in the college’s 37 departments, led by faculty at the forefront of teaching and research in their disciplines. The college teaches all Iowa undergraduates through the college's general education program, CLAS CORE. About 80 percent of all Iowa undergraduates begin their academic journey in CLAS. The college confers about 60 percent of the university's bachelor's degrees each academic year.
