Nathaniel Gier '14

Iowa City, IA
class of 2014 student Nathaniel Gier

Majors: Economics, Mathematics, Spanish

Why did you choose your major?
I chose economics because I see it as a great combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis—I love studying the statistics related to how people react in decision making. I need to be able to understand the math and also how people work. I love Spanish because learning another language opens up doors to the rest of the world.

What campus organizations and activities are you involved in?
Tennis Club, Jazz Band, intramurals

Any off-campus organizations?
Big Brothers Big Sisters

Have you studied abroad?
I studied abroad in Valladolid during the summer of 2012.

What have some of your favorite classes been outside of your major? Why?
I really enjoyed History of Jazz because it hit on one of my biggest interests outside of class—music, namely jazz. I also had a great professor.

Have you participated in research projects with faculty members?
I did an honors research project with Stacey Brook last semester in Sports Economics. I analyzed the different factors that might impact college football coaches' salaries. I compiled data and did some regression analysis. It was fascinating!

Who has been your favorite professor and why?
I've had so many at Iowa. One that comes to mind is Roberto Ampuero—he's a bestselling novelist in South America and now serves as the Chilean ambassador to Mexico. He's a pretty cool guy. Also, Judy Liskin-Gasparro has been a great mentor for me. She is an extremely helpful professor.

What advice would you give to a first-year student?
Get connected within the university and never stop networking. Get to know lots of people. You never know how they may be able to help you!

What are your post-graduation plans?
To either pursue a PhD in economics or continue on with a job for 4-6 years, then pursue an MBA!

Anything else?
Go Hawks!
