Scholarship Opportunities for Students in Asian & Slavic Languages & Literatures
Tsara Ann Hinman Award:
Both undergraduate and graduate female students (not including international students) currently pursuing degrees at The University of Iowa and also enrolled in a Chinese language class may apply for the Tsara Ann Hinman Award.
Preference will be given in either case to students who demonstrate (1) an aptitude and achievement in previous work in their Chinese language study, and (2) serious commitment to Chinese study but need financial assistance. Priority will be given to students who intend to continue their Chinese study after the award period.
An amount of $150 will be awarded to the successful applicants. The award will be made in two installments: $75 for the fall semester and $75 for the spring semester.

Helen Fairall Scholarship:
Juniors and seniors majoring in Asian Languages and Literature, as well as graduate students in the Asian Civilizations MA program, are eligible to apply for the Fairall scholarships, offered through the department and the U of I Foundation. (Non-majors and minors are not eligible.)
Under the terms set by the Fairall family, applicants must have been born in Iowa and must have attended and/or graduated from Iowa elementary/secondary schools. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is required.

Cheng/Liu Summer Scholarship:
Undergraduate and graduate students in the Chinese track of the Asian Languages & Literatures major and the Asian Civilizations MA program, who plan to return to the University of Iowa for further study, are eligible to apply for the Cheng/Liu Scholarship.
The scholarship may be used only at a recognized summer Chinese language program in the United States or abroad. The proposed summer program must provide the equivalent of a full academic year of Chinese language study. The award of up to $1,000 is based on merit rather than on need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate (1) aptitude and achievement in previous work in Chinese language, and (2) serious commitment to incorporating Chinese language in future study and career goals.
Please contact the Division office in 111 Phillips Hall (319-335-2151 or email@example.com), for the application form and information on the deadline for applying (usually near the beginning of April). Applications include (in addition to the form and the student’s statement of purpose) two letters of recommendation (one must be from a Chinese language instructor) sent directly to the selection committee. The applicant must also submit evidence of intent to study during the Summer (i.e., a copy of your application to or acceptance by one or more summer language programs) and a description of how the total cost of the summer study will be funded.

Stanley Summer Scholarships
Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in Asian Languages & Literatures/Asian Civilizations are eligible to compete for summer scholarship aid for intensive language study provided by the Stanley-University of Iowa Support Organization. Scholarships consist of a cash grant for use in an approved summer language program.
Applications are available at the beginning of the spring semester, for awards to be applied to the upcoming summer.
International Programs Scholarships:
A variety of scholarships to support study abroad and summer language programs are available from the Office of International Programs. Freeman Awards for Study in Asia:
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA), made possible by generous support from the Freeman Foundation. Created to assist U.S. students with demonstrated financial need and limited prior experience in East and Southeast Asia, Freeman-ASIA will fund approximately 400 students over the next two academic years, with awards ranging from $3,000 per student for summer study and $5,000 per semester, to a maximum of $7,000 for a full year abroad. Students may apply online starting February 1st for awards to study abroad beginning in summer 2016. Prospective students should visit the Freeman-ASIA website for eligibility requirements, full application instructions and a list of deadlines.

Chinese Government Scholarship:
Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in Chinese Language classes are eligible to Apply. The Chinese Government Scholarship from the Chinese Ministry of Education is to support students studying Chinese language and culture at a Chinese university in Mainland China. The scholarship will cover tuition, medical insurance and monthly living allowance for one semester of study in China. Applications are available every March, for awards to be applied to the fall.
